Meet Bertie

Skipper Bertie Swart, was born in Bredasdorp, and has lived in Struisbaai for 23 years. His love and obsession with fishing began early, spending his childhood fishing with his dad and friends. He then naturally found himself working on the local commercial fishing boats on weekends and holidays.

Bertie married into a fishing family, when in 2007, he married the daughter of Struisbaai commercial fishing legend Traill Witthuhn. He got his skippers licence and was soon part of
the family business, learning and working as much as he could.
All while perusing a full time
career as a Radar Control Technician at Denel Overberg Test Range.

Now, after 23 years with Denel, Bertie is ready to do what he loves most and share his passion for fishing. Launching Ocean Charters is Bertie’s dream job!

Our Boats

Ocean 1 is a 28ft Carry Cat powered by twin 150hp Suzuki engines. Custom-built for comfort with 4 large fish hatches, a fighting chair and comfortable seating for 12 people.

The boat is equipped with a Furuno 588
fish-finder and Garmin 62cv clear charter plotter, live fish well and deck wash. The boat is well equipped and has all the required safety equipment as surveyed by SAMSA on board.

The boat is capable of getting you to the fishing grounds quick and comfortably which gives us more time to fish!

Ocean 2 is a brand new 30 ft carry cab powered by twin 200hp Suzuki engines. Then boat is equipped with the latest Furuno and Garmin fish finders with Garmin radar for extra safety. The boat has a in built in toilet. This boat is big with a lot of working space.

Struisbaai & Agulhas

A true gem of the Overberg region, Struisbaai boasts the longest stretch of white, sandy beach in the Southern hemisphere. At the picturesque harbour you will see the colourful fishing boats and Parrie, the resident stingray. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to explore and enjoy.

Travel just a few kilometres south to L’Agulhas to stand at the Southern Tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Climb
in the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, discover shipwrecks of yesteryear and the pebbled beach of Suiderstand. Other villages to visit while in the area are Elim, Arniston, Bredasdorp, Napier and Swellendam.

Ocean Charters is a brand new fishing charter operated and run by Bertie Swart. Based in the
beautiful, old fishing town of Struisbaai, we specialize in deep-sea fishing and cruising excursions
leaving from the picturesque harbour. Catching fish

are passionate about making each trip, fun, safe

WHAT WE CATCH

We offer full and half day trips. Our location is perfect for an amazing day at sea. The Agulhas Bank is
reputed to be the richest fishing area in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the region where the warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic Ocean meet making it a nutrient-rich area for marine life and one of the best fishing grounds in South Africa. These fishing spots are home to a variety of game fish like Marlin, Tuna, Yellowtail, Dorado, Cob, Cape Salmon and Red Steenbras as well as a diversity of bottom fish. Here, we also find many varieties of shark such as Dusky, Mako, Ragged Tooth, Bronze Whalers, Tope, Hammer Head, Seven Gill and Thresher. Everything you need for fishing is provided on the boat, and that includes rods, reels, tackle, live and artificial baits, a dedicated skipper and even a first mate!
